While I'm on dancing all over the trivial...

Has anybody got any suggestions for music to go with Proust? Something backgroundy to cancel out the fascinatingly distracting sounds of the world going on outside.

  1. Phillip Glass, I'd say. The string quartets played by Kronos Quartet.

I thought your post title was a protest about Lionel Ritchie's AFL final performance trivialising the importance of the game.

  2. Strangely enough I don't find football games or sport all that important. I generally find them expensives wastes of time populated by people who would be better served by living in the real world and not being pandered to. But that's just me. I'm sure if there wasn't professional sport we'd have a lot more unemployed people. Possibly even more aggression as I've never worked out if the mass viewing of team sports actually lessens mass aggression or encourages it. /tedious sport rant

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

  3. So not When the Saints Go Marching In on repeat?

I'm not sure there's enough music in all the world to accompany what you're reading. Perhaps thick curtains and silence.

  4. Mr Cad, I don't need new music for each page. The music can be on repeat. I need background noise to cancel the background noise.

  5. John Cage's 4'23", on repeat.

  6. Charles Ives! He was all into background noise. He came up with ideas like composing a symphony for whole towns - he envisaged instrumentalists sitting on different hills, walking about the town square, all playing in response to one another. I don't think he ever finished that piece.

He also asked the question, 'what would happen if two marching bands coming from the opposite side of town went past one another'? And, well, wrote the answers.

  7. Not that I've ever listened to Ives seriously, but he sure is fun to talk about.

  8. No idea, I just wanted to see what others would suggest for this question.
